The aim of this study was to analyze acute drug poisonings in an adult population of Kragujevac region in the period from May, 2000 to April, 2001. It is one-year prospective study in which age, sex, monthly distribution of intoxicated people, the kind of toxin, way of exposition, education as well as clinical manifestation and treatment were analyzed. One hundred poisoned persons have been observed in the mentioned period, the average age of intoxicated men was 34.9 years and 27.4 years for intoxicated women. Medical official writings of the Center of Emergency Medicine in Kragujevac were used as well as a list of acute drug poisonings recorded by the authors. The analysis of drug poisonings shows that benzodiazepine poisonings have been most frequent. Benzodiazepines were used individually or in combination with alcohol and/or with other psychotropic agents. Poisonings of women have been more frequent (2.6 times) than poisonings of men, and one fourth of all intoxicated people where women between 20 and 29 years of age. The lowest number of acute drug poisonings was noted in summer months (July and August), while the highest number of poisonings has been in April (17). Former drugs and alcohol misuses (toxicomania) and suicide attempt, lower level of education, unemployment, psychiatric diseases as well as disturbed family relationships, represent risk factors for acute drug poisonings. Acute poisoned people exhibited mental disorder as a dominant symptom. Eight patients underwend prolonged treatments. Not one mortal case was noted. Our results show that acute drug poisonings represent a very important problem of medical care, especially in people younger than 30 years.
