ABSTRACT
Diabetic nephropathy is one of the most important causes of the ending stage of chronical renal failure. On the basis of results of the clinical studies so far, it was has been determined that diabetic nephropathy occurs in 30-40% of patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and in 25-50% of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. During its development, diabetic nephropathy passes through five stages. The stage of initial diabetic nephropathy distinguishes itself with microalbuminuria. In patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 microalbuminuria appears five years after beginning of the disease. Contrary to this, in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 initial diabetic nephropathy and microalbuminuria develop while still in the stage of glycointoleration. Early detection of initial diabetic nephropathy, adequate glycoregulation and blood pressure control, prevent the diabetic nephropathy progression and development of the ending stage of chronical renal failure.
