Introduction: Platelet Growth Factor (PDGF) is the major mitogen for many mesenchymal-derived cells. PDGF receptor A (PDGFR-α)
is a receptor present on the surface of a large number of cell types. Positive PDGFR-α cells have recently been detected in the
Human gastrointestinal tract, localized within the circular muscle layer and in the area of the Myenteric Plexus.
The Aim: The Aim of this research was to identify PDGFR-α cells in Human Fetal intestines, and to determine their distribution in
relation to muscular structures and Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC).
Material and Methods: The material consisted of 5 Human Fetuses, gestational age from 10 to 12 weeks. The
immunohistochemical test was carried out with the PDGFR-α antibody, ICC were identified using the C-kit antibody, while the
muscle structures were demonstrated by the Desmin antibody.
Results: PDGFR-α immunoreactive cells are present within the circular muscle layer, while they are not present in the Myenteric
Plexus region, nor in parts below the serosa. Unlike them, ICCs are present only around the beginnings of the ganglion of the
Myenteric Plexus.
Conclusion: In the fetal period, Humans develop, PDGFR-α immunoreactive cells are present in all parts of the intestines, they are
localized only within the circular muscle layer and do not coincide with the ICC.
